The Trivandrum Zoo or the Thiruvananthapuram Zoo is centrally located in the heart of the Trivandrum City, Kerala. Located on the Trivandrum Museum - Vellayambalam Road, the Thiruvananthapuram Zoo is one of the oldest of its kind in the country. Established by Maharaja Swati Thirunal of Travancore as an annex to the Trivandrum Museum (Napier Museum) in 1857, the Thiruvananthapuram Zoo is spread over in 55 acres of land and is a favourite place of interest for the people of Trivandrum as well as the tourists. The Trivandrum Zoo is home to different species of animals as well as birds.
Animal Species
The major animal species include the Royal Bengal Tiger, Indian Rhino, Nilgiri Langur, Lion Tailed Macaque, Nilgiri Tahr, Leopord, the Asiatic Lion, Capuchin Monkey, Jaguar, Indian Fox, Himalayan Black Bear, Indian One Horned Rhinoceros, Sambar Deer, Hippopotamus, Indian Elephant, Nilgai, Mithun, Small Indian Civet, Travancore Flying Squirrel, Cape Buffalo, and Giraffe.
Bird Species
The bird species found in the Thiruvananthapuram Zoo include Indian Peafowl, White Spoonbill, Cassowary, White Ibis, Rosy Pelican, Parakeet, Grey Heron, Painted Stork, Cinerous Vulture, Pariah Kite, Brahminy Kite, Emu, Common Crane, and Sulphur Crested Cockatoo.
Reptile House
The Trivandrum Zoo’s Reptile House is home to different varieties of poisonous and non- poisonous snakes, lizards, crocodiles and turtles. Some of the different species of reptiles visitors can see here include Gharial, Mugger Crocodile, Spectacled Caiman, Monitor Lizard, Bamboo Pit Viper, King Cobra, Indian Cobra, Green Tree Snake, Russell's Viper, Indian Rock Python, Rat Snake, Checkered keelback, Red Sandboa, Indian Flapshell Turtle, Indian Black Turtle, Crowned River Turtle, and Travancore Tortoise.
Other Amenities
The Trivandrum Botanical Garden with varied specimens of tropical plants and trees is also located in the Zoo premises.
The Natural History Museum and Sri Chitra Art Gallery is also located in the Trivandrum Zoo premises which exhibits rare artifacts of historical and cultural significance.
Visiting Hours
Trivandrum Zoo is open from 9:00 am to 6:15 pm on all days except Monday. Tickets will be issued up to 5:15 pm only. Camera allowed with fees - Still camera Rs. 10 and Video Camera Rs. 500.
How to reach there
The Trivandrum Zoo is just 3 km from Thiruvananthapuram Central Bus Station and Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station. Trivandrum International Airport is around 7 km from the Zoo premises.
